Scene 1: The Wolf's Den
[Rama wakes up and enters the den, wakes up Raksha, then they both rub each other's noses]
Raksha: Come on now, my little ones. It's time to wake up. A new day is beginning and there is much to do.
Rama: Let's go, my sons. Up and at 'em. Rise and shine.
[the wolf cubs wake up]
Grey Brother: What does "rise and shine" mean anyhow?
Wolf Cub 1: All I know is I don't feel like rising or shining.
Wolf Cub 2: I'm hungry!
Wolf Cub 3: You're always hungry!
[the wolf cubs start playing]
Tabaqui: [offscreen] Yoohoo! Oh, wolfies! Is anybody home?
Raksha: Now who could that be this early in the morning?
Rama: Who do you think? [Tabaqui appears at the entrance of the den] Good morning, Tabaqui. What can we do for you?
Tabaqui: Oh, nothing, really. I just wanted to say good morning. Unless, perhaps, you happen to have a scrap, a morsel that you don't want that I can have for breakfast.
Raksha: Well, Tabaqui, there are a few scraps left over from last night's dinner. Nothing, really.
Tabaqui: Thank you, friends. Scraps will do nicely. [licks a bone]
Wolf Cub 2: Scraps always do nicely for a jackal like Tabaqui.
Wolf Cub 3: Were you saving them for yourself, pudgy?
[the 2 wolf cubs fight]
Raksha: Alright, boys! If you wanna play that way, you know where to do it. Come on, outside now, all of you!
[the wolf cubs leave the den in a hurry, Tabaqui finishes with the scraps]
Tabaqui: Simply marvelous scraps, my friends, I thank you. You have heard the news, I suppose.
Raksha: News? What news, Tabaqui?
Tabaqui: About Shere Khan? Certainly you've heard.
Tabaqui: About Shere Khan? Certainly you've heard.
Rama: [impatiently] Don't toy with us, jackal! Out with it!
Tabaqui: Shere Khan, he has returned.
Rama: Now what does that lame old tiger want around here?
Raksha: Do not dismiss Shere Khan lightly, my husband. He may be lame and he may be old, but he is cunning and ruthless as well. If he has indeed returned to this part of the Jungle, there is cause for concern.
Tabaqui: Not only has he returned, he has returned...to hunt.
Rama: But this is the Domain of the Wolf! Shere Khan has no business hunting here.
Tabaqui: And not only does he return to the Domain of the Wolf to hunt, but he hunts a very special prey?
Raksha: What "special prey"?
Tabaqui: Oh, maybe I shouldn't say.
Rama: [angrily stomps] Tabaqui!
Tabaqui: [nervously] He hunts...man.
Rama: Man? But hunting man is forbidden by Jungle Law!
Raksha: [worried] Oh, I fear trouble! When an animal hunts man, it brings other men seeking revenge. And then there is nothing but trouble.
Rama: My wife speaks the truth. How long has Shere Khan been hunting in these parts, Tabaqui? Where is he now?
Tabaqui: How long, I do not know. I only know that he is even now starting the woodcutter's camp less than a league from here.
Tabaqui: How long, I do not know. I only know that he is even now starting the woodcutter's camp less than a league from here.
[Rama and Raksha head out of the den, followed by Tabaqui with a bone in his mouth, then a tiger's roar is heard]
Rama: I know that voice. It's Shere Khan. For once, the jackal speaks the truth.
Tabaqui: [confused] What do you mean, "for once"?
[another tiger's roar in heard]
Rama: Shh! A tiger has missed his prey and has landed instead in the woodcutter's campfire. That bumbler, Shere Khan! Now he'll be lame in more than 1 foot, at least for a while.
Raksha: He will be angry at his own clumsiness, and a lame, angry tiger is no-one to fool with. Come, my sons, let us go inside for a while. [she and her cubs retreat into the den]
Rama: Is there no way to convince Shere Khan to go back to his part of the Jungle?
Tabaqui: I doubt it, friend wolf. You know that Shere Khan is a fearsome, proud beast. He loves nothing better than to stir up trouble.
[a turkey's voice is heard]
Rama: Shh! Something is coming. Do you hear it?
Tabaqui: It sounds too small to be a tiger.
Rama: Whatever it is, I must protect my family from it. [pause] NOW! [he pounces but stops midair and falls on his feet]
[a human baby appears from under the bushes and wanders into the den, followed by Rama and Tabaqui, then snuggles next to Raksha]
Raksha: It's only a cub. A man cub!
Rama: So it would appear.
Raksha: Look how brave he is. A brave, little, naked frog. I shall call him Mowgli the frog.
Tabaqui: What do you mean, you shall call him? He is a man cub, not a wolf cub. He is not yours.
Raksha: He seems to think he is mine. Why shouldn't I keep him?
Rama: He is brave, as brave as any wolf I've seen. Look how small and naked he is. I could destroy him with one swat of my paw, but he's completely fearless.
[Tabaqui sniffs Mowgli, then Mowgli slaps Tabaqui in the face and laughs]
Raksha: Brave as can be is my frog boy, little Mowgli. Someone must care for him.
Tabaqui: But adopting a man cub, that is asking for trouble!
Rama: Mother wolf has spoken. If keeping him is asking for trouble, then I suppose we shall just have to provide an answer for that trouble. Besides, how much trouble could a little frog boy like him bring?
[Shere Khan enters the den, Rama runs up to him]
Rama: Shere Khan does us great honor with his uninvited visit. What do you want here?
Shere Khan: My prey! A man's cub wandered this way. I have frightened his parents off, now he is mine. Give him to me!
Rama: This is the Wolf's Domain, tiger! We take orders from Akela, the head of the pack, not from some cowardly striped man hunter. The man cub is ours now! [Shere Khan roars and tries to get deeper in the den] You are far too big to enter our cave, beast with singed paws. Begone, before you get stuck in our doorway!
Shere Khan: Am I to lay here, wedged in your caveway, to argue with the children of dogs?! GIVE ME MY PREY! It is I, Shere Khan, who speaks!
Raksha: [growls ferociously and runs up to Shere Khan] And it is I, the mother wolf, who answers you! The man's cub is mine, Shere Khan. He belongs to me now! He shall live with the pack. And one day, when he has outgrown his infancy, it is he, O cowardly hunter of naked cubs, who will hunt you! Now go, burned beast of the Jungle, or I will send you back to your mother, LAMER THAN YOU ARE EVEN NOW!
Rama: You heard the lady, Shere Khan. The man cub is ours! BEGONE!
Shere Khan: [growls and exits the den] We shall see what the pack says about this adopting of man's cubs. You must abide by the law of the pack and they will agree that the cub is mine! In the end, I shall have him to enslave, or to eat, or to do with what I desire! Enjoy him while you can, O dog-tailed thieves. [leaves]
[Raksha licks Mowgli in the face, Mowgli laughs]
Rama: Shere Khan speaks at least this much truth. The cub must be shown to the pack. Will you still keep him?
Raksha: Keep him?! He comes to me naked, alone, and without fear. And that lame butcher would've killed him and run off, bringing men into the Jungle to get their revenge. Keep him? Of course I will keep him!
Rama: Then we shall show him to the pack at the next Council meeting and see what shall happen to our little Mowgli.
Rama: Then we shall show him to the pack at the next Council meeting and see what shall happen to our little Mowgli.
[Raksha licks Mowgli again]
Scene 2: The Council Meeting
[a few days later, the animals gather at Council Rock]
Raksha: See how well Mowgli fits in even after only a few days? He is a smart one, I tell you.
Rama: Yes he is, and as strong as he is brave.
Rama: Yes he is, and as strong as he is brave.
Shere Khan: Akela must give the man's cub to me. He is mine! I've captured him from a brush and I will have him for dinner.
Tabaqui: It is all well and good to want him, Shere Khan. But it is not for Akela alone to decide. Your dinner may be a little lighter than you planned. [Shere Khan glares at him] But then again, I'm sure you're right. You're always right, O mighty warrior. Hoo...!
Akela: It is time to look over the new cubs and assess the future of the pack. Let the possession begin! Let the pack observe the future. Look well, O wolves, look well and choose.
[the wolf cubs walk forth, including Mowgli]
Shere Khan: This man's cub who trails the line, he is mine! GIVE HIM TO ME! No-one speaks for him so he is mine!
Akela: You have no rights at a Council meeting, Shere Khan, and you know it! But you know the Law of the Jungle and you know it well. Who speaks for this cub?!
[the wolves hesitate]
Raksha: If no-one speaks for Mowgli, I will fight to the death for him.
Rama: Mother, calm yourself. You know it must be 2 other than his parents who must speak, or else I would sponsor him myself. But it is the law and we must obey.
Baloo: [stands up and walks over to Akela] Akela, I don't belong to the pack, but since I am the teacher of the cubs, I do have a vote. There is no harm in adopting a man cub, but I hear they are very smart. Let him live and run with the pack. I'll teach him myself.
Shere Khan: [irritated] That stupid bear, Baloo! How dare he speak for my prey!
Tabaqui: Calm down, your Lordship. The naked one needs 2 to speak for him. He has only 1 vote so far. [Shere Khan nods in agreement]
Akela: Is there another who will speak for this cub?!
[Bagheera wakes up from his slumber, Shere Khan looks over his shoulder]
Bagheera: O most noble wolf pack, I am not of your kind, but I ask permission to speak freely here at your Council meeting.
Akela: Speak, Bagheera. Your words are welcome here.
Bagheera: To kill a naked cub is a shame. Baloo has already spoken on his behalf. Now, I'll offer you 1 bull, a fat one at that. Newly killed, and not a half mile from here, if you will accept the man cub into the pack according to law. What do you say?
[the wolves agree]
Akela: Then it is done! The naked man's cub shall run and hunt with the pack!
[Shere Khan roars furiously]
Raksha: Mowgli! [runs up to Mowgli and licks him in the face]
Shere Khan: [steps in] I do not know why you have voted to keep the man's cub, but the law is the law and I must accept it. [roars] But I swear by the bull that bought him the day will come when Mowgli the frog is mine! All mine! And when that day comes, I shall hunt him down and kill him like the naked cub he is! [leaves]
Bagheera: We shall see who hunts who, Shere Khan. We shall see.
Scene 3: The Jungle's my Home
[10 years later...]
Bagheera: Now watch as Mowgli demonstrates what I just taught him: how to tell a dead branch from a live one. Up you go, little frog!
[Mowgli climbs a tree, looks over a dead branch and sniffs the air]
Mowgli: Rotting wood, unsafe for climbing. [he climbs a live branch and feels the wind lightly blowing]
[Baloo and Bagheera wait by a waterfall, Mowgli can be seen running across the plains, then he jumps up, grabs a branch then swings on it]
Mowgli: [as he swings from tree to tree] YEAH HAHAHA HAHA!!!
Baloo: Look at him go! He runs like a gazelle.
Bagheera: He flies through the trees like the Bandar Log monkeys.
Baloo: Let's just hope he doesn't learn how to make mischief like those monkeys do.
Mowgli: [still swinging from tree to tree] YEAH HAHAHA HAHA!!!
Baloo: Oh, he's such a noisy one. I just cannot get him to move through the Jungle in silence.
Bagheera: He will learn, Baloo. You are a good teacher. He will learn.
[Mowgli swings from a vine and jumps into the river, resurfaces and waves at Baloo]
Baloo: [waves back at Mowgli] I gotta tell ya, Bagheera, he's the best student I ever taught.
Bagheera: He learns quickly and remembers well.
Baloo: [looks at the river] Where has he disappeared to?
Mowgli: [sneaks up behind Baloo and Bagheera] BOO! [laughs]
Scene 4: The Monkeys Steal Mowgli
[Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera sit underneath a huge tree]
Baloo: Alright, little Mowgli, let's hear the Master Word of our lion brothers.
Mowgli: Ahem! RAAAAAAAAAHHHR!!!
Baloo: Which means...?
Mowgli: "We are of one blood, you and I.".
Baloo: Very good! Now, the Master Word of the snake? [Mowgli hisses] Correct! Now, the kite?
Mowgli: [whistles] We are of one blood, you and I.
[the Bandar Log monkeys drop nuts and fruits on Mowgli, until Bagheera scares them off]
Mowgli: Why do you always chase away the monkeys? I like them. They're funny.
Bagheera: You must not associate with the Bandar Log monkeys, little brother. They are forbidden to the Jungle creatures.
Mowgli: But why?
Bagheera: The Bandar Log are sneaks, thieves, and liars, Mowgli. They have no laws among their tribe. The monkeys boast and brag that they are the cleverest in the Jungle, but their boasting is empty and their bragging hollow.
Mowgli: But I like them and they like me.
Baloo: Bagheera is right, Mowgli. The Bandar Log are the sneakiest, most conniving little furballs in the Jungle. You must not associate with them. What do you mean, they like you? You have been speaking with them?
Mowgli: Well, only once or twice. But why shouldn't I speak to them? Are not all the beasts of the Jungle my brothers?
Bagheera: The Bandar Log are not of the Jungle, Mowgli. They live above the Jungle floor, in the trees. It is forbidden for you to associate with them.
Mowgli: But I don't understand! I don't understand at all!
[the Bandar Log grab Mowgli by the arms, Baloo and Bagheera try to stop them, but they swing him through the trees]
Mowgli: [spots Chil flying by] WE ARE OF ONE BLOOD, YOU AND I!!!
[Chil flies to search for Baloo and Bagheera to bring news from Mowgli]
Baloo: [pacing] Those good-for-nothin' sneaks. They better not hurt my little buddy. Why, I'm gonna...
Bagheera: [slaps Baloo in the face] Snap out of it, Baloo! What would the Jungle think if I, the black panther, curled up and howled like a porcupine?
Baloo: Why do I care what the Jungle thinks? Those thieves got our Mowgli. He may be dead by now.
Bagheera: [jumps down] No, Baloo, you have taught him well. Mowgli can take care of himself. Now, let us be off to find an ally to help us rescue him.
Baloo: An ally?
Bagheera: We must find Kaa, the rock python. [walks into the long grass]
Baloo: Excellent idea! He is the one beast that the monkeys fear most, and with good reason. But what if Kaa will not help us?
Bagheera: He will if you will keep quiet and let me do the talking.
Bagheera: He will if you will keep quiet and let me do the talking.
Baloo: Are you saying that I talk too much? Is that what you're saying? Because if it is, Bagheera, I protest your accusation. [follows Bagheera into the long grass] I know how to hold my tongue. Oh, my poor Mowgli, why did I let him get kidnapped? How could I have not protected him?!
Scene 5: The Rock Python
[Kaa can be seen sleeping on a rock, Baloo and Bagheera make their approach]
Baloo: There he is! We're in luck! Kaa looks hungry.
Bagheera: Be quiet, Baloo, and let me do the talking.
Baloo: [offended] There you go again, hinting that I talk too much! I... [Bagheera bonks his head] Okay, you do the talking.
Bagheera: Hail to you, Kaa!
Kaa: [wakes up] And hail to you, Bagheera. What brings you here to the Domain of the Serpents?
Bagheera: We look for our little brother Mowgli.
Kaa: Ah, the man cub. I have dreamt of him often. If he was not a brother of the wolf pack, I would've snacked on him long ago.
[Baloo prepares to fight]
Bagheera: [whispers to Baloo] That is merely snake humor, Baloo. Calm down! [Baloo calms down]
Kaa: And where is your brother, Bagheera, that you search so far from your own Domain for him?
Bagheera: He has been stolen by the Bandar Log monkeys.
Kaa: [hisses angrily] Those wretched monkeys! Liars and sneaks, all of them! They have no proper respect for the beasts of the Jungle! I have heard them dare to call me names, the vermin!
Bagheera: "Footless yellow earthworm"?
Kaa: [offended] WHAT DID YOU CALL ME?!
Bagheera: Not I, Kaa. The monkeys called you that when we told them you would help us avenge the kidnapping of our brother.
Kaa: [enraged] THEY CALLED ME THAT?!
Baloo: That and also "fat, slow, legless caterpillar".
Kaa: They shall eat those words, and then I shall eat THEM! Please, I pray you, let us be off. I have not eaten for a fortnight and could use a little...monkey snack.
Chil: Bagheera! Baloo! I have been looking everywhere for you! I bring news from Mowgli.
Baloo: Mowgli! Is he alright?
Chil: For the moment. But the monkey folk are taking him to the Cold Lairs, and who knows what will happen to him there.
Kaa: Well, now we know where our prey is. Let us be off. [slithers into the long grass]
Bagheera: Thank you for the message, Chil.
Chil: I could do no less. He spoke the Master Word. Amazing for a man cub. [flies away]
Baloo: Did you hear that?! He spoke the Master Word! I told you he would be alright, didn't I? That's what having a good teacher will do for ya. Now let's go before it's too late.
Kaa: [pops his head out the long grass] Are we going together or do I travel alone?
Bagheera: We can travel faster than you can, Baloo. Catch up with us as quickly as you're able. [follows Kaa into the long grass]
Baloo: [impressed] He spoke the Master Word. That's my boy.
Scene 6: The Cold Lairs
[the Bandar Log monkeys swing Mowgli onto the floor of the Cold Lairs]
Mowgli: [stands up] Alright, enough is enough! Now you better return me to my pack.
[the Bandar Log monkeys laugh]
Bandar Log Leader: Return you? You're our greatest prize ever! We'll NEVER bring you back!
Mowgli: Then prepare to defend yourselves! [picks up a rock and throws it]
Bandar Log Leader: [jumps and grabs a branch] Whoo! You're funny, frog boy.
Mowgli: Baloo and Bagheera were right about you! You are all crazy!
[the Bandar Log monkeys laugh again]
Bandar Log Leader: Yeah, yeah! That's right! We are crazy! And you're in trouble. [2 monkeys grab Mowgli] Put him in the Serpent's Hole until he learns some manners, if he lives that long.
[the monkeys throw Mowgli down a hole, Mowgli gets up and finds he is surrounded by snakes, the Bandar Log monkeys laugh until they hear Bagheera roar]
Bagheera: Death to those who take one of the Seeonee pack! [pounces]
[the Bandar Log monkeys scatter as Bagheera chases them off]
Bandar Log Leader: He's alone! The panther is alone! We outnumber him! Get him! Get the intruder!
[the Bandar Log monkeys pile on Bagheera and they fight each other]
Mowgli: [hisses at the snakes who finally stop to hear the Master Word] We are of one blood, you and I! One blood, I tell you! [the snakes slither away, he hears a panther's growl] Bagheera! [climbs out the hole]
[Bagheera is still fighting the Bandar Log monkeys, Baloo arrives and he too fights the Bandar Log monkeys]
Bandar Log Leader: Now, my Bandar Log brothers, death to the intruders!
Mowgli: [as he climbs out the hole] Bagheera, Baloo, watch out!
[the Bandar Log monkeys laugh in victory]
Bandar Log Leader: Yes, Bagheera, Baloo, watch out so you won't miss your own deaths! [he and the other monkeys laugh until they hear a snake's hiss]
[Kaa hypnotizes the Bandar Log monkeys in a trance]
Baloo: Kaa! He saves the day.
Bagheera: Shh, Baloo! You will break the Spell of the Python.
[Mowgli looks around at the hypnotized Bandar Log monkeys, then climbs on Bagheera's back, then Bagheera and Baloo run off with Mowgli]
Mowgli: What will Kaa do to them?
Bagheera: Some things it is better for a cub not to know.
[as they run off into the jungle, Kaa picks up the Bandar Log leader with his coils]
Kaa: Now then, what's this about a footless yellow worm? [eats the Bandar Log leader]
Scene 7: Bagheera Warns Mowgli
[Shere Khan meets with the wolves at Council Rock]
Shere Khan: Akela is old and weak! How long will you let him lead you? You deserve a leader who is strong and brave, a leader like myself.
Teenage Wolf 1: You are right about Akela, Shere Khan, but you are not a wolf. You have no rights here.
Shere Khan: I see. So you will continue to follow a spineless leader, one who lets a man cub live among you like a brother.
Teenage Wolf 2: But we can do nothing about Mowgli. He lives and hunts among us.
Shere Khan: Then give him to me! I will see to it that he lives and hunts among you no longer.
[Bagheera meets with Mowgli at the wolf's den]
Bagheera: Ah, here you are, little brother.
Mowgli: Hi, Bagheera. Good hunting to you.
Bagheera: When it comes to hunting, it is not I, but Shere Khan that should consume your thoughts, Mowgli.
Mowgli: Shere Khan? Has that lame coward returned.
Bagheera: More than just return. He turns the young wolves against you and against Akela as well.
Mowgli: Have no fear, Bagheera. The young wolves will never turn on Akela, as long as he's their leader.
Bagheera: Precisely, little one. Akela grows old. Soon he will attack the buck and miss, then he will be their leader no more.
Mowgli: Don't worry, Bagheera. Akela may be old, but he's still strong. [walks to a rock]
Bagheera: Yes, but when he misses the buck, the pack will be without a leader. [walks to Mowgli] It is then that Shere Khan will strike. You must prepare for that day.
Mowgli: "Prepare"? How?
Bagheera: You must go the Man's Village.
Mowgli: Man's Village?! But it's forbidden!
Bagheera: It is forbidden for the Jungle creatures, but you are a man cub. You can come and go unnoticed.
Mowgli: And what should I do there?
Bagheera: You have seen their pots, the ones that glow with red heat. You must take one of their pots, hot with coals, and bring it back quickly. I will wait for you here.
Mowgli: But...
Bagheera: Go! There is not much time. [Mowgli runs to the Man's Village] I only hope that there is time enough.
[that night, outside the Man's Village, a boy is gathering coals, Mowgli walks up to him, the boy looks over his shoulder, then screams and runs in terror]
Mowgli: [picks up the fire pot] How scared these men are. Afraid of a cub like me. [runs back to the Jungle, laughing]
Scene 8: The Fire Pot
[Bagheera is pacing at the entrance of the wolf's den]
Bagheera: Where is he? Could he have been captured? I should not have sent him alone.
Mowgli: [runs back from the Man's Village with the fire pot] I got it, Bagheera! [flames fly out of the fire pot, scaring Bagheera] You look frightened, brother. What's wrong?
Bagheera: Pray it is, uh, nothing, little frog. Now, quickly, you have much to learn.
[Bagheera instructs Mowgli to use fire, then Mowgli gathers the coals]
Bagheera: You must use the heat carefully, Mowgli, for it can rage out of control if not watched closely.
Mowgli: I understand, Bagheera.
Bagheera: But it is a most powerful weapon. Use it wisely and it will serve you well. [sees Tabaqui coming over with a sly grin on his face] Hmm, your self-satisfied sneer can only mean 1 thing, Tabaqui.
Tabaqui: You are right, wise Bagheera. Akela has missed the buck. He has no longer the leader of the pack. [Mowgli and Bagheera share concerned looks] You are hereby summoned to Council Rock, Mowgli. The wolf brothers are waiting to turn you out of the pack. [cackles twice] At last, Shere Khan will be rewarded for years of patience.
Bagheera: [whispers to Mowgli] Your new weapon, little frog. Use it now.
Mowgli: [takes out a fire stick and burns Tabaqui with it] And this is your reward, jackal, for being servant to the evil Shere Khan! [Tabaqui runs away, never to be seen again] I do not understand, Bagheera. The wolves are my brothers. I alone can remove the thorns from their paws. Why do they wanna turn me out?
Bagheera: Look me in the eye, Mowgli. [Mowgli does so] That is why, little brother. The others hate you because their eyes cannot meet yours. They hate you because you are wise, because you can pull the thorns from their paws, because...you are a man.
Mowgli: I can't help what I am.
Bagheera: Come, little brother, let us go to the Rock. And bring the fire pot with you.
[meanwhile, at Council Rock]
Shere Khan: Akela has missed his buck!
Akela: I was tricked and you know it.
Shere Khan: It matters not why, only that you have missed. Now you cannot be leader!
Akela: My brothers, and those jackals among you who follow Shere Khan, for 12 years, I've been your leader. Now I have missed my kill, and it is your right to kill me. Who among you will claim the honor of killing Akela?
[the wolves hesitate]
Shere Khan: Bah! Why should we bother with a toothless old dog like Akela? He will die soon enough. It is the man cub that lives too long. [sees Mowgli coming] There is the man cub! He does not belong among you. Give him to me! He is rightfully mine!
Akela: He has eaten among you! He has hunted among you! He has broken no laws of the Jungle. Yet now you would kill him?
Akela: He has eaten among you! He has hunted among you! He has broken no laws of the Jungle. Yet now you would kill him?
[the wolves protest]
Bagheera: And I paid for his life 10 years ago with a bull.
Shere Khan: A bull 10 years gone! What do we care about 10-year-old bones? He's a man! He must be destroyed!
Mowgli: ENOUGH! I won't listen to this jabber anymore! You've said I was a man often enough. [ignites a fire stick] Then listen to the man, you dogs, listen to me! You say I am a man? [swings flame around] Then cower before me! You are my brothers no more! I stand on 2 legs while you crawl upon 4. And I have thumbs to pull out thorns from your pathetic paws. [swings flame around again] Back away, miserable curs! Mowgli the man commands you, and you must obey like the dogs you are! [sets Shere Khan's tail on fire]
[Shere Khan runs away from fear of his tail being set on fire]
Mowgli: There goes your brave leader! As for me, I leave you all gladly. You brotherhood has been a lie all along! I HATE YOU ALL! [drops the fire stick and runs away]
[meanwhile, back at the wolf's den, Raksha comforts Mowgli]
Mowgli: [crying] I don't wanna leave the Jungle, but I can't stay here. [sees his tears on his hands] What is this, Mother? Am I dying?
Raksha: [licks Mowgli in the face] No, my son, you are not dying. These are only tears. Animals do not cry, but you are a man. Let your tears fall, little Mowgli. And when you are done, you must go to live among your own kind. You must go to live among men.
[Mowgli hugs Raksha]
Scene 9: The Man's Village
[at the Man's Village, the boy tells a story of how he saw Mowgli earlier that night]
Village Boy: It was right here that he appeared from nowhere. He was not there one moment and then the next moment he was.
Buldeo: They boy obviously fell asleep and had a nightmare. [the other villagers nod]
Village Boy: I was not sleeping. It was a boy, I tell you, a naked boy from the Jungle. [sees Mowgli] There! That's him, see? I told you!
[Mowgli steps forth and gestures to his mouth]
Buldeo: What does he want?
Village Boy: I think he's hungry. [hands Mowgli a piece of bread]
[Mowgli snatches the piece of bread from the boy's hand and eats, the villagers are amazed]
Buldeo: He is the same age that a child snatched from a sewer 10 years ago would be. Can it be? Can it be that what the Jungle has taken, the Jungle has returned to us?
Messua: [walks up to Mowgli and looks at him] It's true. This is my son come back to me. Oh, my son! My son! [hugs Mowgli]
[later that night]
Messua: [shows Mowgli a cup] Cup. This is a cup.
Mowgli: Cup.
Messua: Clever boy. [shows a piece of bread] Bread.
Mowgli: [snatches the piece of bread and eats it] Bread!
Messua: [smiles and tries to tuck Mowgli in] Bed. Lie down and go to sleep.
Mowgli: Sleep! Sleep! [stands up and climbs out the window]
Messua: Where are you going?
Mowgli: To sleep. [jumps onto the ground]
Messua: I suppose you can't be expected to be civilized in 1 night. If you're more comfortable sleeping outside, then so be it. Good night, my son. Welcome home.
Mowgli: [sadly looks up at the night sky] Home.
Scene 10: Where Do I Belong?
[the next day, Mowgli can be shown adjusting to human life, then the next day, he helped a peasant girl who walked next to him]
Buldeo: [walks up to Mowgli] No, no, Mowgli. You mustn't help the peasant girl.
Mowgli: Not help her? Why?
Buldeo: She is beneath your station. She is a peasant! You are the son of a landowner.
Mowgli: I don't understand. She's standing right next to me. So how can she be beneath me?
Buldeo: [sets the buckets down] It simply isn't done.
Buldeo: [sets the buckets down] It simply isn't done.
Mowgli: [picks up the buckets] Maybe not before Mowgli came, but now it is done. [he and the peasant girl start walking again, leaving Buldeo confused]
[later that night]
Buldeo: And the fiercest beast of the Jungle is Shere Khan, the mighty tiger. In reality, he is a spirit who inhabits the body of the beast, and he appears lame to lure unsuspecting mortals close to him.
Mowgli: [laughs in disbelief] You speak nonsense!
Buldeo: [offended] WHAT?! You dare insult me, Jungle Boy?!
Mowgli: I mean no disrespect, but you make me laugh. Shere Khan is no spirit. He limps because he's clumsy and forever getting caught in traps like by men like you.
[the other villagers look shocked]
Buldeo: [frustrated] Oh, Mowgli, Mowgli, when will you learn some respect? You cannot address me like that.
Mowgli: It's a little late for that, old man. I already have.
Buldeo: You are not fit to associate with the rest of the Village! You may take the herds out from now on, where you can practice your insults on the cattle!
Mowgli: [stands up] Fine with me. [walks away]
Scene 11: The Cattle
[out in the fields, Mowgli is with a herd of cattle, unaware Shere Khan has been stalking him]
Mowgli: [jumps off a bull's back] Go now, brother bull. Feast on your banquet of grass.
[Mowgli jumps on a rock, uses his staff to jump over a stream]
Grey Brother: [offscreen] Psst! Mowgli. Brother.
Mowgli: [looks around] Grey Wolf, my brother! [he hugs Grey Brother] I've missed you so much! How is Mother and Father and my other brothers? How is everything?
Grey Brother: All is well for us, little brother, but I fear perhaps not so for you.
Mowgli: Oh, living among the humans isn't so bad.
Grey Brother: It is not humans of which I speak, it is Shere Khan. He's been stalking you for days. He waits for you at the ravine to attack you when you return to the Village with your cattle.
Mowgli: [looks at the ravine, then looks back] Is that so?
Grey Brother: It is so. I am here to warn you.
Mowgli: But if Shere Khan waits for me, I will not disappoint him.
Grey Brother: You have a plan?
Mowgli: The beginnings of one. [takes out his knife] Listen... [carves a bamboo stick]
[Shere Khan waits at the ravine]
Shere Khan: [last words] In less than an hour, I shall eat the meal that I hale waited more than 10 years to taste. [licks his lips, then laughs evilly]
[a rumble is heard, Shere Khan sees a herd of cattle charging and runs away, then stops to see another herd of cattle charging in his direction, he looks in both directions and finds he is trapped, he tries to escape but slides off the side of the ravine, then sees Mowgli with a spear, he throws the spear, killing Shere Khan who is also getting trampled by the cattle]
Scene 12: Mowgli Forgives the Seeonee
[meanwhile, at Council Rock, Mowgli wears Shere Khan's hide]
Raksha: Did I not tell you that Mowgli would someday hunt Shere Khan?
Rama: That you did, Mother. I have never been more proud of one of my sons.
Baloo: Best student I ever taught.
Bagheera: [walks up to Mowgli and turns to the wolves] So now, Seeonee pack, do you see who has vanquished Shere Khan? Shall we not welcome bake our brother Mowgli and beg his forgiveness for our foolishness?
[the wolves howl with joy]
Teenage Wolf 3: Let him lead us! Let Mowgli be our new leader!
[the wolves continue howling, Mowgli takes off Shere Khan's hide and calms down the wolves]
Mowgli: It's been a long time since you turned your back on Akela. You have been without a leader ever since. But it's not my place to lead you. You are wolves and I am a man. Wolves must be led by a wolf. If he is willing, let Akela lead you once again.
[the wolves chant "Akela!" 8 times, Akela jumps onto Council Rock]
Akela: Yes, my brothers, I will lead you once again. Perhaps now with Shere Khan dead, we can live in peace with the other Jungle creatures. [turns to Mowgli] Your generosity and dignity speak well of the Seeonee pack, Mowgli, and you are wiser by far than your years. But I sense something in you has changed since you lived among your own kind. Are you able to live here with us, your wolf brothers, as you once did?
[Mowgli sadly turns around and walks away]
Wolf Cub 4: But where is Mowgli going? Isn't he going to stay here and live with us again?
Akela: You must remember, little one, that Mowgli was cast from the pack. Returning was easy. Sometimes, forgiveness takes more time.
[Mowgli stops for a moment, then turns around with a forgiving smile, then runs to the wolves, who then howl with joy once again, and celebrate Mowgli rejoining the pack]
